Jan has researched and ghost-written executive speeches as well as official industry reports for corporate leaders, has written forewords to books on natural history and business, and served as media consultant to many high-profile companies and institutions. He is one of the most prolific media freelance writers in South Africa as editor of weekly specialist pages in three major South African newspapers: the mass circulation daily The Star in Johannesburg, Sunday Tribune in Durban, and Natal Mercury, also in Durban.
In South Africa, his clients have included the country’s transportation giant, Transnet; leading fuel producer, Sasol Oil & Chemicals; the Master Builders Association; The Concrete Institute; Association of Quantity Surveyors; The Institute of Marketing Management; The Portland Cement Institute; the Paint Manufacturers’ Association; Aggregate & Sand Producers’ Association; and many others.
Jan writes an advisory column on the formulation of business tenders for The Star. He has done freelance writing for a wide range of publications, including the internationally-renowned Condé Nast which internationally publishes leading print and digital journals such as Vogue and Vanity Fair. Jan has also written for one of the world’s leading family-interest magazines, Reader’s Digest, as well as other print and on-line publications; and has guest lectured on journalism at university level. He wrote media reviews for one of the world’s top cruising operators, Crystal Cruises, and was a regular guest on many British Tourist Authority press visits. A skilled photographer, most of Jan’s articles carry his own pictures.
Prior to his self-employed corporate writing and consulting career, Jan held several top press posts in South Africa including Industrial Editor of the country’s largest business publication, Business Times; Travel Writer for South Africa’s Saturday Star; and Editor and Co-founder of Environmental Action, a conservation magazine subsequently acquired by the global Laurens van der Post Foundation for the Advancement of the Humanities.
